Tread depth is the legal minimum, not the target
The minimum legal tread depth is 1.5mm across the tread. That is the point at which a tyre becomes illegal, not the point at which it stops performing. Wet weather grip and braking distances fall away well before it. Check the wear indicators moulded into the grooves, and look for uneven wear across the tyre, which usually points at alignment or pressures rather than the tyre itself.
What uneven wear is telling you
Wear on the inside or outside shoulder generally means alignment. Wear down the centre means over-inflation, and wear on both shoulders means under-inflation. Patchy or scalloped wear points at worn suspension components. Replacing tyres without fixing the cause means the new set wears out the same way, so we look at why before quoting a replacement.
Alignment and the roads around here
Alignment drifts over time, and it drifts faster once you have met a kerb or a decent pothole. If the steering wheel sits off-centre on a straight road, or the car wanders, it is worth checking. Correct alignment also gives you the tyre life you paid for. We check and adjust to the manufacturer's specifications rather than a generic setting.
Balancing, rotation and pressures
A vibration through the steering wheel at around 90 to 100km/h is usually a balance issue rather than anything serious, and it is a quick fix. Rotating tyres at service intervals evens out wear between the driven and non-driven axles. Pressures are worth checking monthly, because under-inflation costs fuel, wears the shoulders and runs the tyre hot. The placard with the correct pressures is usually inside the driver's door.
Age matters as well as tread
A tyre with plenty of tread can still be past its useful life. Rubber hardens as it ages and grip falls away, particularly in the wet, and cars that spend a lot of time parked outside in coastal air at Seaford or Frankston South tend to show sidewall cracking earlier. There is a four-digit date code on the sidewall giving the week and year of manufacture. If your tyres are several years old, they are worth a look regardless of how much tread is left.
