Brake inspection and repair, explained

The signs worth acting on

Brakes tend to tell you before they fail. A squeal that comes and goes, a grinding noise as you slow down, a pedal that feels soft or travels further than it used to, the car pulling to one side under braking, or a shudder through the pedal at highway speed. Any of those is worth having looked at. Grinding in particular usually means the pad material is gone and the backing plate is contacting the disc, which turns a pad replacement into a disc replacement.

What we check

An inspection covers pads and discs front and rear, or shoes and drums where they are fitted, along with calipers, slides, hoses, and the condition and moisture content of the brake fluid. Fluid matters more than people expect: it absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point and makes the pedal feel soft under sustained braking. Most manufacturers set a replacement interval for it regardless of how the pads are wearing.

Stop-start driving wears brakes faster

If your driving is mostly around Frankston (Nepean Highway traffic, the shopping centre run, school pick-ups), your brakes work harder than the odometer suggests. Constant low-speed stopping puts far more cycles through the pads than open-road driving does. The same goes for towing, and for the hillier runs around Mount Eliza and Mornington. It is why two cars with identical kilometres can need different brake work.

Pads, discs and what needs replacing

Pads are consumable and will need replacing several times over a car's life. Discs are not automatically replaced with them. It depends on thickness, scoring and whether they have warped. Some can be machined back true, some are already below the manufacturer's minimum thickness and have to be replaced. We measure rather than guess, because machining a disc that is already too thin creates a brake that fades under heat.

What happens after the inspection

We will tell you what we found, what needs doing now, and what can reasonably wait. Where there is a choice, replacing discs against machining them for instance, we will explain the difference and let you decide. You will have a quote before any work starts. Brakes are the one system where we would rather you booked early than waited to see whether the noise goes away.

Booking a brake inspection

We are on Tooyal Street in Frankston, open Monday to Friday, and easy to reach from Seaford, Langwarrin, Carrum Downs, Skye, Baxter and across to Mount Eliza. If you have noticed a noise or a change in the pedal, mention it when you book and describe when it happens: cold or warm, light braking or hard, straight line or turning. That detail narrows things down before the car goes on the hoist. Call (03) 8760 0019 or book online.
