What's involved

Roadworthy inspections for Frankston and the Peninsula

When you need a certificate

In Victoria you need a Roadworthy Certificate to sell a registered vehicle, to re-register a vehicle that has been off the road, and to clear a defect notice. It is issued by a licensed vehicle tester and confirms the car met the minimum safety standard on the day it was inspected. It is not a statement about mechanical condition or reliability. A car can pass a roadworthy and still be due for a service.

What gets inspected

The inspection follows the published Victorian standard and covers the things that keep a car safe on the road: brakes, steering and suspension, tyres and wheels, seatbelts, lights and reflectors, windscreen and wipers, the exhaust and body structure, and anything affecting the driver's control or visibility. We inspect against that standard rather than a house checklist, so there are no surprises about what counts.

If it doesn't pass first time

Plenty don't, and it is usually something small: a worn tyre, a blown globe, a wiper blade past its best. If your car fails, we will show you exactly what didn't meet the standard and what is needed to put it right. You are free to have that work done wherever you like; there is no obligation to have us do it. Bring the car back within the allowed period and we will re-inspect the items that failed rather than starting again.

What to bring and how long it takes

Bring the car with a reasonable amount of fuel, the spare wheel and jack if it came with one, and the registration details. Allow a couple of hours, and we will let you know when you book if your vehicle needs longer. If we notice something that isn't a roadworthy item but is worth knowing about, we will mention it and leave the decision with you.

A roadworthy is not a service

The two get confused often enough to be worth separating. A roadworthy checks the car against a minimum safety standard at a point in time. A service follows the manufacturer's maintenance schedule and is about keeping the car reliable. A car can pass a roadworthy while being overdue for an oil change, and a freshly serviced car can fail one on a worn tyre. If you are due for both, book them together and we will do them in the one visit.

Book before you list the car

If you are selling, it is worth getting the inspection done before the car goes online rather than after you have found a buyer. That gives you time to sort out anything needing attention without a sale hanging on it. We are on Tooyal Street in Frankston, close to the Nepean Highway and convenient to Seaford, Carrum Downs, Langwarrin, Mount Eliza and Mornington. Call (03) 8760 0019 or book online.
